Average cycling speeds by category
Recreational cyclists typically average 18 to 24 km/h on flat terrain. Club-level riders hold 25 to 30 km/h. Competitive racers sit between 30 and 38 km/h, and elite cyclists exceed 40 km/h in solo efforts. In a group or peloton, drafting can reduce aerodynamic drag by 20 to 40%, allowing speeds 3 to 6 km/h higher than solo riding at the same power output. The calculator uses your expected average speed, which should account for terrain, wind, stops, and traffic.
Factors that affect cycling speed
Wind is the biggest variable. A 15 km/h headwind can reduce your average speed by 4 to 6 km/h. Elevation changes matter: climbing 500 m over 20 km adds 10 to 15 minutes compared to a flat 20 km at the same power. Road surface, tyre pressure, riding position, and even clothing all affect rolling and aerodynamic resistance. When entering your speed into the calculator, use a number that reflects realistic conditions, not your Strava PR on a perfect day with a tailwind.
How to estimate ride time
Time equals distance divided by speed. A 100 km ride at 28 km/h takes 3 hours 34 minutes. The calculator handles this instantly and converts between km/h and mph automatically. For multi-segment rides, calculate each segment separately and add them up. For events with known distances (like a 40 km time trial or a 160 km sportive), enter the distance and your target speed to see your projected finish time.
Working backwards from a target time
Switch to "Required pace for target" mode to find the speed you need. If you want to complete a 100 km sportive in under 4 hours, the calculator tells you: 25 km/h. This is powerful for goal-setting because it converts a vague ambition into a specific, measurable target. Train to hold that speed in conditions similar to race day.
Fueling for long rides

How this works
The engine is the same for every mode: time equals distance divided by pace, summed across legs. In Triathlon mode you input swim distance and pace, bike distance and speed, run distance and pace, plus T1 and T2 transitions. The calculator adds them up. In Running and Cycling modes you supply the single leg.
Switch to Required pace for target and the engine works in reverse: enter your goal finish time and it tells you the pace you need to hold. For triathlon, it assumes your swim, bike, and transitions stay as entered and solves for the required run pace.
Pace and distance can be entered in any units (km/mi, m/yd, /100m or /100yd, km/h or mph). Conversion is handled automatically.
This tool provides an educational estimate based on the inputs you provide. Real race times are affected by elevation, wind, drafting, nutrition, pacing strategy, and individual physiology. Use it as a planning aid, not a guarantee.
